Before embarking on a long trip

• Plan your route before you go - and let someone else know your route
• Stay on main roads as far as possible
• Let someone know where you're going
• Let the person you are visiting know when to expect you, or agree to call someone to let them know you have arrived safely
• Check over the general condition of the car (oil, water etc) before you leave
• Make sure that you have enough fuel, or know where you can stop in time to get some more
• Always carry a full spare petrol can
• It's a good idea to also carry a torch with you
• Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged before you leave
• It may also be a good idea to carry a phone card or some change to make phone calls if you have problems with your mobile phone
