Driving Advice
If you break down on the motorway
- Pull into the hard shoulder as far over to the left as possible
- Point your wheels into the bank, away from the road
- If at all possible, stop near an emergency telephone
- Telephones are positioned at every mile - this means that the furthest you may have to walk is half a mile
- NEVER cross the carriageway to get to a phone
- It is safer to walk back in the direction that you came from as you can watch out for danger from approaching vehicles
- Every 100 yards you will see an arrow pointing to the nearest telephone
- Once you have phoned for help, return to your car immediately
- As you walk back to your car, glance behind you to keep an eye on traffic
- If at all possible, you should wait for help outside your car, sitting on the grass verge (out of sight of oncoming traffic)
- If you do return to the car:
- Lock all doors and close all windows
- Sit in the front passenger seat so that you do not appear to be alone
- Women may want to where a baseball cap to deter any unwanted attention
- Remember that you are at greater risk from other traffic and not personal attacks
- At night, keep your side lights and hazards on only to extend battery life
