Ploughing through snow

Despite predictions of warmer winters, here in the UK we still get our share of treacherous weather - usually without warning. Cold snaps can quickly reduce roads to ice rinks and even just a few inches of snow can paralyse - leaving abandoned vehicles and stranded drivers strewn across the country.

And we don't just suffer at home. Every year, more and more of us head off to the ski runs of Europe in our run-of-the-mill family cars, ill prepared and ill-equipped for the hazardous conditions awaiting us.

The often heard excuse when we get caught out is that ' it's the wrong kind of snow' or 'the wrong kind of ice 'or the wrong kind of cold'. But there's no such thing - just the wrong kind of tyre.

At Goodyear, we've always dedicated ourselves to making the right kind of tyre - for every kind of condition. The latest example of which is our advanced UltraGrip 7 tyre.

This new high performance winter tyre doesn't just incorporate one new technology; it incorporates three - each of which were developed precisely to improve both traction and handling in ice, snow and slush.

Denser packed Waffle Blades are utilised to provide maximum grip from extra biting edges. In combination with the latest three dimensional interlocking system this also affords more responsive handling on both wet and dry roads. New polymers deliver better road adhesion and grip at low temperatures. And double V-grooving provided outstanding snow traction and protection against aquaplaning in slush and puddles.

To further help you master the challenges of extreme weather driving, we've also teamed up with the Ali Ross Ski Clinic to put together a Winter Driving brochure. Packed with helpful hints on everything from winter driving techniques to European tyres regulations, it's designed to ensure you're fully prepared for whatever challenges you may face as you head for the slopes.

You can read our full Winter Driving brochure, but here are some basic tips to get you going.

Before you set off

Fuel

Make sure you have enough to allow for detours or delays.

Lights

Check and clean all lights and lenses. Carry spare bulbs.

Windscreen wipers/washers

Top up fluid and antifreeze solution. Check condition of wiper blades.

Mirrors

Clean and position correctly.

Cooling system

Check hoses and replace where necessary. Top up antifreeze.

Electrical systems

Check fan belt and alternator drive belts are tight and not worn. Top up battery, tighten and grease terminals to keep out damp.

Ignition system

Check condition of plugs, HT and other leads. Spray with Damp Start to avoid condensation.

Tyres

Check all treads (min 1.6mm) and sidewalls for wear & damage - including spare. Cold weather lowers tyre pressure, so check and top up regularly.
